Two Viable Pipe Bombs Found In North Belfast

Two viable pipe bombs have been found in the New Lodge area of north Belfast.

A security alert was sparked in the Churchill Street area at around 1pm on Wednesday, 22 August.

Army bomb disposal experts carried out controlled explosions and they were declared viable devices.

The alert has now ended and residents have returned to their homes.

Sinn Fein councillor JJ Magee condemned the incident.

He said: "Two pipe bombs were found in the New Lodge area this morning by men working in the area. 

"I'm relieved that no one has been hurt and these lethal weapons have now being taken off the streets.  

"The discovery of these devices has caused serious disruption in the area which has now been sealed off by police with residents and workers evacuated.

"These devices could have endangered residents in the area or the workmen who discovered them."

PSNI Confirms Flag Violence Arrests
The PSNI has confirmed a total of eight arrests were made as a result of disorder over the Belfast City Hall union flag issue. Three police officers were injured when missiles ranging from petrol bombs, paint bombs, fireworks and heavy masonry were thrown by loyalist protesters. PSNI vehicles were attacked with hatchets and sledge hammers.

Viable Pipe Bombs Found In L'Derry Made Safe
Three viable pipe bombs discovered in Drumahoe, L'Derry, have been made safe. The devices were found by a member of the public on Wednesday morning. Army bomb experts attended the scene at approximately 10.30am. Police said the devices had the potential to kill or maim. A number of roads closed during the security alert have been re-opened.

Police Appeal After Children Cause Disorder In L'Derry
Police are appealing for information after children aged between 10 and 12 were reportedly causing disorder in L'Derry. The incident happened on the Madam's Bank Road area shortly before 9pm on Wednesday. Police received reports that several young people were throwing petrol bombs onto the road and setting traffic lights on fire.

Pipe Bombs, Gunpowder And Cocaine Seized In Drogheda
Pipe bombs, gunpowder, cocaine, a large quantity of ammunition and suspected Alprazolam tablets have been seized in Co Louth. Garda discovered the haul during the search of a property in Drogheda at around 11pm on Thursday, 23 April. A number of homes in the area had to be evacuated during the search.
