Department Of Health To Launch Review Of Neurology Services
The Department of Health is to launch a regional review of neurological services covering all neurology specialities.
The review will entail a comprehensive review as part of the Department’s programme of service reviews, announced in 2016 by the former Health Minister in Health and Wellbeing 2026 'Delivering Together'.
Permanent Secretary Richard Pengelly said: "The review of neurology services aims to build on several initiatives that are currently being provided to help improve the pathways for people with neurological conditions and those referred with symptoms suggestive of a neurological condition."
Welcoming the move, SDLP Deputy Leader Nichola Mallon MLA said the review must be completed quickly and "produce a clear set of recommendations which the Department commits to implementing".
"The vast and unsustainable pressures on neurology services have been brought into sharp focus by the Neurology Recall but they have been well known by previous Health Ministers and the Department of Health for some time," the North Belfast MLA said.
"The actions required to ease the pressures on staff, improve services and outcomes for neurology patients are well documented and known.
"This review must be completed quickly and produce a clear set of recommendations which the Department commits to implementing. The last thing neurology patients and staff need is another review which ends up gathering dust on a shelf alongside its predecessors."
The review will formally get underway in September with the aim of producing an initial report by early 2019.
