Belfast Giants Announce New Signing: Patrick Dwyer

The Stena Line Belfast Giants have announced the signing of former NHL player, Patrick Dwyer for the 2018/19 season. The American forward arrives in Belfast from SønderjyskE of Denmark's Metal Ligaen.

Dwyer, who becomes the 199th player to ice for the Giants, played for the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes in seven straight seasons between 2008-2015. The 35-year-old posted 42 goals and 51 assists, good for 93 points in 416 NHL games.

Commenting on the announcement, Mr Dwyer, said: "From early on in my career, Belfast was always a place that I was intrigued to come and play in. We almost came to an agreement last Summer and unfortunately it did not work out. However I am excited this year to get to go and play for the Giants.

"It was amazing to get the chance to play professionally and play in the NHL with the Hurricanes. I enjoyed & relished the opportunity and can recall all of my 400+ games!

"I am a hard working guy whether it is not he forecheck or on defence. I can put up points too and enjoy helping on the powerplay. I am willing to do whatever we need to do to hoist some championships in Belfast."

Belfast Man Convicted Of Benefit Fraud

A 41-year-old Belfast man has been convicted of claiming more than £25,000 in benefits he was not entitled to.

Raymond Allen, of Mount Vernon Road, Belfast, was convicted of claiming Jobseeker's Allowance and Housing Benefit totalling £25,011 while failing to declare employment.

Mr Allen was sentenced to a combination order of 12 months probation and 80 hours community service. The fraud was uncovered following an investigation by the Department for Communities.

He is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Department.

South Antrim MLA Condemns Arson Attack

Sinn Féin South Antrim MLA, Declan Kearney has condemned an arson attack on a house in Antrim's Springfarm estate.

Mr Kearney said: "I want to condemn in the strongest possible terms the arson attack carried out in Islay Street late on Wednesday night. We are very fortunate that we are not dealing with multiple deaths or serious injury as the result of this despicable attack on the home of a young family.

"Whatever the motive for this attack, those responsible have shown a callous disregard for the lives of the occupants, including eight young children.

"The fact that they chose to launch their attack in the full knowledge that most of the occupants of that family home would be asleep, is particularly sinister.

"I am therefore asking the public to assist the police in any way possible with their investigations and help bring these criminals to justice."
