Record 19 Green Flag Awards Across Belfast

Belfast City Council have welcomed a record 19 Green Flag awards issued by environmental charity Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful.

Belfast can now boast an additional two Green Flag parks with Connswater Community Greenway and Half Moon Lake joining the roll call for the first time.

Belfast's Botanic Gardens also received the Heritage Award, given in recognition of sites which conserve, enhance, and help people to enjoy and celebrate the heritage of the park. It is home to the Palm House and Tropical Ravine, which reopened in spring following the completion of a £3.8 million restoration.

The Green Flags – an internationally recognised certification for environmental quality management - are awarded for exceeding tough environmental standards for green space management and visitor facilities.

Councillor Kate Nicholl, chair of Belfast City Council's People and Communities Committee, said: "For such a relatively small city, Belfast boasts an impressive number of parks and green spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy.

"Today's announcement is an endorsement of all our hard work in maintaining the city's parks to an extremely high standard, and a credit to our parks staff and team of gardeners who work all year round, in all weathers, to provide first-class facilities for everyone to enjoy."

She added: "It's great to see newcomers on the list too; Connswater Community Greenway has been such a successful project and is a great asset for the city. So too is Half Moon Lake which has undergone improvements in recent years and has become a popular spot with locals and visitors alike."

Dr Ian Humphreys, Chief Executive Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful, also said: "We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme.

"We are proud to have so many wonderful green spaces in Northern Ireland for people to experience, and encourage the public to head outdoors.

"The Green Flag Award is a sign of a well-managed, clean and safe park, and with many people increasingly relying on their local park as a place to exercise, relax and have fun, quality green space has never been more important."
