£41m Downe Hospital development gets go ahead
Plans to proceed with the construction of a new £41 million Downe Hospital were announced today by the NIO Minister with responsibility for Health, Social Services and Public Safety, Angela Smith.
It is expected that construction work on the enhanced local hospital, a bridge between hospital and primary-community care, located on the Downshire campus site, will be commenced later this year.
Announcing the hospital development today, the Minister said: “The construction of this new hospital will be a key early development in the planned programme of hospital modernisation set out in ‘Developing Better Services’. The Downe Hospital has long been served by a dedicated and professional work force with a proud history of committed service to the local community. This investment recognises that vital role.
“I am delighted that we can make these sources available for the people of Downpatrick and for the wider area. It will secure the future of the hospital and enable it to continue to play its full part in delivering high quality services for the local population. This is a happy day for the Down community, who can now look forward to having a new, modern hospital, fully equipped to meet their needs now and for the foreseeable future.”
While the new hospital will have a 24-hour accident and emergency provision and a cardiac care unit, there will not be full emergency surgical unit on site. Emergency cases requiring surgery will have to be transferred to other fully equipped hospitals.
Over the next decade, it is expected that around £1.2 billion in capital expenditure will be invested in a comprehensive acute hospital development programme with the aim of creating a modern, efficient and patient-centred service.
The modernisation programme should lead to fundamental changes in the way hospital services are delivered and ensure that local communities will benefit from new treatments, new technology and modern professional skills.
Construction of the new hospital is expected to be completed during the 2007/08 financial year.
