Rise In Number Of People Waiting Over 12hrs In Emergency Departments

The number of people waiting over 12 hours in emergency departments in hospitals throughout Northern Ireland has increased by over 360% in the last year, according to new figures.

The data, published by the Department of Health, compared waiting times from April to June 2017 and April to June 2018.

Figures revealed the number of people waiting over 12 hours rose from 294 in June 2017 compared to 1,358 in June 2018.

However, 72% of patients were treated and discharged or admitted within four hours.

New statistics released by the Department of Health show the number of patients forced to wait 12 hours or more in Northern Ireland's A&E departments has fallen. Figures for April to June 2013, reveal a significant fall from 1,008 to just 249 patients – a decrease of 75%.
