'Viable Pipe Bomb Type Device' In L'Derry Security Alert

Police have declared a security alert in Londonderry was the result of a "viable pipe bomb type device".

The alert began with reports of a "loud bang" outside a house in Bann Drive at about 11.15pm on Tuesday, 17 July.

It is understood that a man and woman were in the house at the time of the incident but escaped uninjured.

A number of homes in the area were evacuated while the Army bomb squad examined the scene. A section of the road remains closed this morning.

Police are working to establish a motive for the attack and have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.

Posting to Twitter, DUP MLA Gary Middleton said: "Disturbing that an explosive device was thrown at a property in Bann Drive area of the Waterside last night. Homes were evacuated. Thankfully we are not dealing with injury or loss of life.

"These attacks must be condemned and I would encourage anyone with info to contact PSNI."
