Montgomery adopts confident tack without Wareing
Five days after former Mirror Group Chief Executive and News of the World editor David Montgomery stepped into the newsroom of the Belfast News Letter, the paper's leader column this morning is lauding the tenure of departed editor Nigel Wareing.
The leader this morning referred in the past tense to Mr Wareing as an editor who "had contributed immensely to the development of this proud newspaper".
The editorial storm appeared to really get going when Mr Wareing, who was interviewed on Radio Ulster on Tuesday, defended Monday's controversial agenda-setting leader, purportedly penned by Mr Montgomery, on "Putting the Pride back in Protestant" which bemoaned the erosion if not eradication of certain aspects of the Protestant heritage.
Adopting a strongly Unionist stance Monday's leader column declared: "From this day, the News Letter will promote the agenda to restore confidence and pride to our readers who are part of the Protestant and unionist heritage."
Mr Montgomery, whose role was initially described as that of an "advisor" to the investment-backed deal in which consortium Local Press Limited took over the News Letter from Trinity Mirror on Friday, was quick to make his mark on the longest continually published paper in the UK.
Local Press has confirmed that "a major overhaul" of editorial strategy" is underway.
In a further stirring leader column this morning, the newspaper stated: "It [The News Letter] has much further to go in order to serve its traditional readership and, thereby, serve the entire Northern Ireland community".
