PSNI's Drew Harris Appointed New Garda Commissioner
PSNI Deputy Chief Constable Drew Harris has been appointed the new Garda Commissioner.
The post is for a five-year-term and he will take up the post in September.
PSNI Chief Constable George Hamilton said the appointment can only build on what is already a close working relationship between the PSNI and An Garda Síochána.
Mr Hamilton said: "In his 34 years as a police officer in both the RUCGC and the PSNI, Drew Harris has been driven by a commitment to protect the most vulnerable in our community. I have no doubt that this will continue to be his ambition as Garda Commissioner. He is a man of unfathomable strength, humility and grace and I have been privileged to have him serve as my Deputy Chief Constable for almost four years.
"I wish him every success and look forward to working with him as Commissioner."
The Minister for Justice and Equality, Charlie Flanagan T.D., said: "I am confident that Drew Harris has the necessary ability and vital policing, security and change management experience required. He will bring these talents to his leadership of An Garda Síochána - one of our most important institutions of state - along with a commitment to serving the public in the best tradition of the Gardaí.
"I very much look forward to working with Drew on our shared objective of ensuring the security of the State and the safety of the public. Drew can be assured of my support and that of the Government as he faces the challenge of transforming An Garda Síochána so that it becomes a model of policing excellence, equipped to deal with the huge range of challenges facing police services worldwide."

'Marginal' Rise In Latest Crime Statistics
A total number of 98,301 crimes were recorded in 2017/18, according to the latest annual statistics published by the Police Service of Northern Ireland. The new figures represent a marginal rise of 0.3% crimes on the previous year 98,041 but remain the second lowest total recorded since 1998/99.

'High-risk' sex offender rearrested
A high-risk sex offender who has been missing since last week, has been detained by police in Garvagh, County Londonderry. Robert Wallace, 78, who was residing in Belfast had not been seen since Thursday morning, despite attempts to locate him.

Closer links forged in cross-border crime fight
The PSNI and An Garda Síochána today signed joint protocols aimed at further enhancing the close working relationship enjoyed by the two police forces. The signing is being seen as significant given the ongoing investigations into alleged IRA money laundering in the south and the recent Northern Bank heist in Belfast.

PSNI Is 'Not Protecting Dealers'
PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Drew Harris has said the police do not protect drug dealers. He was responding after Health Minister Edwin Poots told BBC Radio Ulster he would not be surprised if it was discovered that the PSNI was working with drug dealers in exchange for information on individuals higher up the drug trafficking chain.
