MLA seeks talks over Keady plant closure

Ulster Unionist Assembly member for Newry and Armagh, Danny Kennedy, is seeking a meeting with the management of Dale Farm following the announcement today that the company plans to close its operation at Tassagh in Keady, Co Armagh.

Mr Kennedy said: “This is devastating news for the workforce and a serious blow for the local economy in an area where jobs are difficult to obtain.

“I am hoping to make contact with the management to agree talks about the situation and possibly ascertain if there is anything that can be done to assist the two dozen or so employees who will lose their jobs come September if the closure goes ahead.

“The dairy industry continues to feel the strain of difficult times and I realise that this is being reflected in more and more job losses in this sector. I understand that the company plans to reinvest at its Cullybackey operation.

“However, I intend to explore as many avenues as possible to see if anything can be done to help those whose employment is threatened by this disappointing news.”

Dale Farm confirmed today that re-employment opportunities at other locations would be offered to the 23-employees concerned.
