NI Housing Executive rent increases announced
The Department for Social Development has announced that Housing Executive rents are to be increased by three per cent for the year 2004/05.
The new weekly rents will come into effect from April 2004 and will mean an increase of £1.28 to £44.23, excluding rates, for the average Housing Executive tenant.
Rates in Northern Ireland are currently £7.80 less than the average local authority rents in England and Wales. This new increase is less than the four per cent increase agreed for council housing in England and Wales.
Over three-quarters of Housing Executive tenants receive housing benefit to pay some or all of their rent. However, they will not be affected by the increase.
In the announcement, the Department for Social Development acknowledged that there were still some tenants, particularly older people with small occupational pensions, who still pay their rent. However, it was stated that the Housing Executive had been asked to ensure that people living on the margins are not missing out on important benefit.
