Larne A8 road benefits from £2.2m roundabouts

NIO Minister, John Spellar has officially opened two new roundabouts, costing £2.2 million, at Millbrook and Antiville on the Larne dual carriageway.

The Minister said the new roundabouts reinforced the importance of the route as a key traffic corridor for the Eastern Seaboard.

Currently 50% of Northern Ireland’s containerised cargo and 32% of tourist traffic moves through the Port of Larne.

“I am pleased to say that substantial improvements have already been completed on the A8 between Belfast and Larne at Ballynure, with further improvements underway between Doagh Road and Coleman’s Corner and others due to start later this year in the vicinity of the Templepatrick Road junction," the Minister said.

“Today therefore marks the completion of just one of the stages in the overall major £12 million package of improvements planned to this route. The new roundabouts at Millbrook and Antiville will be of great benefit to all road users by enhancing safety and access on this important route.”

The scheme includes the resurfacing of the dual carriageway between the new roundabouts, the erection of new safety barriers and the construction of new cycle tracks.

It is hoped that the new roundabouts will improve safety at the Millbrook and Antiville junctions and include an offset bus stop arrangement providing easy access for Millbrook residents. A free-flow bypass lane at Antiville has also been provided to reduce disruption to HGV traffic climbing uphill towards Belfast.
