Appeal To Close Care Home In Enniskillen Dropped

An appeal against the decision to close a care home in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, has been dropped.

The Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (RQIA) confirmed that Runwood Homes Ltd has withdrawn its appeal to close Ashbrooke care home over safety fears.

Sinn Féin spokesperson for Carers, Colm Gildernew MLA, welcomed the decision.

He said: "The inspection report last August raised some serious concerns which needed to be addressed. The decision to close and make an enforcement decision doesn't come lightly from the regulator so it was clear that there were serious concerns. Some of the issues raised by the inspection related to 'systemic care failings and concerns in relation to the management of the home'. It is just a pity that it has taken over seven months for us to get to this stage. It would have been better if that time had been used addressing the problems rather than pursuing an appeal.

"Sinn Féin believe that quality care and high standards are essential for residents, their families as well as the staff who work in the caring sector. High standards benefits everyone and should be something we all strive for."
