Schering-Plough to slash 170 jobs in Cork
Pharmaceutical giant Schering-Plough has followed through on plans announced late last year to slash overall payroll expenses by at least 10% with news that 170 jobs are to go at the Brinny plant near Inishannon in Cork.
The Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Mary Harney said she very much regretted the impact this announcement will have on the workers and their families.
Ms Harney said that though this announcement was not unexpected, given Schering-Plough Corporations declaration of its intention to cut its worldwide payroll expenses by 10%, it is very disappointing news.
"The main priority and focus at this time is to ensure that all those losing their jobs are given the necessary assistance they may require. The commitment of the company together with the resources of FAS and other state agencies will be made available to assist them in finding alternative employment," she said.
The US-based company had targeted staff reductions as part of an effort to make multi-million dollar cost savings in operating costs.
Schering-Plough employs around 1600 people in Ireland mainly at two in pharmaceutical manufacturing plants in Cork and Wicklow.
The research-based company develops, manufactures and markets pharmaceutical products worldwide.

Kingfisher warns of potential drop in profit

Union issues warnings over BT profit loss
Despite making some headway in reducing its amount of debt, British Telecommunications (BT) has revealed yet another quarterly drop in profits. Announcing figures for the second quarter, Chairman Christopher Bland said that BT had succeeded in reducing debt from the “unsustainable” level of almost £28 billion, as recorded in March of this year.
