Forensic pathology services to be centralised
Criminal Justice Minister, John Spellar has announced a major shake-up in the organisation of forensic pathology services in Northern Ireland.
Unveiling his decision to centralise forensic pathology services, the Minister said consolidating forensic pathology services in one location was without doubt the best way forward to secure the long term future of such services in the province.
"The overwhelming public response in favour of centralisation demonstrated during the consultation on future services was a significant basis for my decision, with more than 90% of respondents being in favour of this strategy," the Minister said.
"I am acutely aware of the need to maintain a sustainable, forensic pathology service and of the importance of respecting the three-day burial tradition in Northern Ireland. I am certain that unifying the service in one location, together with the recruitment of an additional Assistant State Pathologist will achieve this.
"Temporary centralisation at weekends has already been in operation for more than two years and has proved very effective in making the best possible use of our forensic pathologists' time and scarce skills."
The consultation exercise, completed in summer 2003, sought the views of the public on five options for service delivery.
These included retaining the current arrangements; providing drivers for pathologists within the current arrangements; recruiting additional pathologists; extending the remit of hospital pathologists; and centralising mortuary facilities.
