Four NI buildings compete for world building prize
Four Northern Ireland buildings have been shortlisted for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors international Building of the Year award.
Lagan Valley Island in Lisburn along with Belfast-based Clifton House, Parkmount, and Christchurch Centre of Excellence, have all been nominated for the award which represents the best of the built environment from around the world.
A total of 41 schemes from across the globe will vie for the title which includes entries such as the Royal Albert Hall and Brighton Pavilion.
The RICS Awards celebrate the best building and conservation projects and the winners will take their place in a long line of highly original and impressive built environment projects.
Past winners include the internationally renowned buildings – Royal Opera House in London, Eden Project in Cornwall and the site of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
As part of the judging process, a panel of RICS experts will visit each shortlisted project from now until the end of February 2004.
Chairman of the judging panel, Simon Pott, FRICS, said: “The response has been overwhelming this year. All the entries highlight the exceptional standards of work being done today to enhance and preserve the global built and natural environments. The shortlist contains a magnificent range of exciting projects which are a credit to the skilled teams involved.”
The entries will be judged across four categories - Building Conservation, Regeneration, Sustainability and Community Benefit. A winner from each category and the overall winner of the RICS Building of the Year will be presented with their awards at a gala ceremony to be held in London in May 2004.
