Loughinisland Murders: Case To Be Heard Before New Judge
A new judge is to hear a legal challenge to a Police Ombudman's ruling of collusion in the Loughinisland massacre.
Six catholic men were fatally shot as they watch a football match in the village in 1994.
Mr Justice McCloskey delivered a verdict that the report by the Ombudsman was unlawful and procedurally unfair.
The judge was asked to step aside over a possible perception of bias.
He has decided to withdraw from the case and said his decision represented an "unprecedented ruling".
Sinn Fein MP Chris Hazzard welcomed the announcement.
He said: "The decision of Justice McCloskey to withdraw from the legal challenge against the Ombudsman report into Loughinisland collusion is the right one and has been welcomed by the families of the victims and their legal representatives.
"The report by the Police Ombudsman that collusion was a major factor in the loyalist murder of six men at Loughinisland in 1994 was an important milestone in the families campaign for truth and justice.
"In this context, today's decision is a welcome development."
