Initiative Re-Launched In Bid To Tackle Bogus Callers Across NI
The PSNI and the Utility Regulator have re-launched a new initiative aimed at tackling bogus callers and helping people feel safer in their homes.
The 'Quick Check 101' scheme allows residents to dial 101 to check the identity of callers to their home who claim to represent an energy or water network company.
As well as being supported by the Commissioner for Older People, the initiative is also backed by all of Northern Ireland’s energy and water network companies; firmus energy, NIE Networks, Northern Ireland Water, Phoenix Natural Gas and SGN Natural Gas.
Jenny Pyper, Chief Executive of the Utility Regulator, explained: "Bogus callers are people who call at your house claiming to be from an organisation in order to trick their way into your home and steal from you.
"Although most people who call at your door are genuine, some are unfortunately not. As protecting the interests of consumers is at the heart of what we do, we wanted to enhance the good work already being carried out by the energy and water companies to tackle bogus callers.
"Re-launching the Quick Check 101 scheme is part of our wider Consumer Protection Strategy which is aimed at providing real and positive change for energy and water consumers in Northern Ireland."
Superintendent Simon Walls from District Policing Command said: "Anyone who wishes to check the identity of someone who says they are calling on the pretext of inspecting gas, electricity or water supplies can now call the police non-emergency 101 number to verify their identity.
"Your call will be answered by a trained police call handler who will take the details of the company which the caller claims to be working for. The call handler will then contact the utility supplier to determine whether the caller is genuine."
The PSNI have offered this advice to residents when answering the door;
• Before answering the front door, make sure the back door is locked.
• If you have a door chain, remember to use it before opening the door. If not, we recommend you get one installed
• Ask the caller for their identification and check it carefully
• Ask them to wait outside and close the door - genuine callers will not mind
• Ring Quick Check on 101. The call will be answered personally and promptly by a trained police call handler. They will check with the company that the person at the door is genuine. If they are not or they think that there is something suspicious, the operator will be able send the police to you
• Do not let anyone into the property until you are satisfied as to who they are.

Cold Callers Target Elderly Residents In Ballymoney
Elderly and vulnerable residents in the Ballymoney area are being targeted by cold callers requesting that they hand over any new £5 notes. A man and woman claiming to be from the government are asking residents to return all notes to them as they are no longer of legal tender.

NI Water Warns Households Of Bogus Callers
NI Water has issued a warning to households to be vigilante to bogus callers posing as staff of the utility company. Bogus callers are an all too common problem, and their preferred course of action is to pose as staff seeking to gain entry to check the water supply in the customer's property, or causing distraction while an accomplice breaks in.

Police Warn Public Over Cold Callers
There has been a number of reports of 'distraction burglaries' in Belfast, according to the police. Cold callers are believed to be walking into homes of vulnerable people in the area with the intent to steal items. Police are reminding the public to be vigilant over unexpected callers.

PSNI Warns Against 'Distraction Callers'
The PSNI has released a statement asking the public to be aware of potential 'distraction burglars' and 'bogus callers', following a spate of recent reports. Officers are particularly targeting residents in the C District area, which covers County Down, North Down, Ards and Castlereagh.

As the evenings stretch out, a senior PSNI officer is urging householders to make sure they do all they can to protect their property. Chief Superintendent Simon Walls wants home and business owners to take the necessary precautions to secure their home and belongings against opportunistic burglars and to be on their guard for cold callers.
