Dungannon firm fined £18,000 following employee's death
The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) has successfully prosecuted a Dungannon based firm following the death of an employee.
Edham Limited, owners of the Dungannon-based company Westland Horticulture, were fined £18,000 for serious breaches of health and safety legislation which resulted in the death of a maintenance fitter employed by the company.
David Burrows, a 25-year old-fitter, was crushed after being drawn into a large conveyor used to transport peat at the company’s horticultural products manufacturing facility at Granville Industrial Estate on 30 May 2001.
In the case heard at Belfast Crown Court, the company pleaded guilty to three charges. The charges related to the failure of the company to provide safe equipment and systems of work, to properly guard dangerous machinery and to provide accessible stop controls.
