Investigations Launched After Gas Explosion In North Belfast

Investigations have been launched following a suspected gas explosion in north Belfast.

A number of residents had to be evacuated from their homes in the Farrington Gardens area of Ardoyne on Wednesday night, 18 October.

The fire may have started in the area which led to the explosion.

One home was significantly damaged.

Sinn Féin Councillor Gerry McCabe said that the Ardoyne community is shocked.

He said: "There has been what appears to be a gas explosion at Farringdon Gardens in Ardoyne.

"While it is early and we don't know what was the exact source of the explosion, many families as a result have had to be moved from their homes in order to maximise safety.

"The Ardoyne community centre has been opened for anyone affected. I want to thank the quick response of the emergency services who are on the scene dealing with the incident."

Homes evacuated on fears of gas explosion
Police in County Londonderry have had to evacuate a number of houses and close a primary school near a blaze due to the possibility of a gas explosion. The fire started in a shed on the Deerpark Road in Bellaghy, close to acetylene gas containers this morning. One of the cylinders later exploded.

Greenisland gas explosion deliberate
A gas explosion and fire in which 50 homes had to be evacuated in County Antrim, may have been caused deliberately according to police. Flames shot 30ft in the air near the railway station on Station Road, Greenisland, on Sunday.

Gas Explosion Rips Apart Pensioner's Home
A pensioner has escaped any major injuries following a gas explosion at his home on the outskirts of west Belfast. The blast blew out three walls and part of the roof as it ripped through the house in Glassveigh Gardens in Twinbrook at about 11.30pm.

PUP councillor evades abduction attempt
Police are investigating a claim by Belfast Progressive Unionist Party councillor Billy Hutchinson that an attempt was made to abduct him this morning. Mr Hutchinson said that four men tried to drag him into a car that that pulled up beside him when he was out for an early morning jog in west Belfast. He escaped by running off.

Teenager Assaulted In North Belfast
A teenager has been attacked in north Belfast. Police are treating the assault as a sectarian hate crime. An 18-year-old boy was approached by a number of males unknown to him as he walked along Ardoyne Road at around 10.30pm on Saturday, 22 May.
