Delegation discuss North West infrastructure with Minister

Business and political leaders from the North West have met NIO Minister, John Spellar to discuss infrastructural investment in the region.

The delegation, led by Derry Mayor Shaun Gallagher, and including John Hume, MLA’s Pat Ramsey, William Hay and Mary Nelis, Derry City Council’s Town Clerk and Chief Executive, Tony McGurk, as well as Council officials, requested that a priority aid package be created for the North West, as existing infrastructure needs cannot be met from the departmental budgets.

Speaking after the meeting in Belfast, the Mayor said: “The delegation reinforced to the Minister the need for substantial investment in regional infrastructure and made the case for a dual carriageway between Derry and Belfast and an upgrade in rail facilities for the region.

“We also presented the case for investment in operational requirements at the City of Derry Airport such as the hold baggage screening system and railway signalling system which are mandatory through new aviation regulations. Minister Spellar took on board our comments and said he was positive that a favourable outcome could be forthcoming."

The cross party delegation also took the opportunity to inform the Minister of the forthcoming investment report and proposal regarding the strategic development at the City of Derry Airport.
