Mayor welcomes opening of Creggan Country Park
A £1.4 million recreational facility in the Creggan area of Londonderry has been officially opened today.
The 100-acre site on the edge of the Creggan housing estate includes an activity centre, relocated fishery, a newly constructed jetty, a network of paths and extensive hard and soft landscaping.
It marks the completion of a project that arose from a community audit commissioned by the North West Development Office under the EC URBAN Community Initiative eight years ago.
Speaking at the official opening, Derry Mayor, Councillor Shaun Gallagher paid tribute to those involved in the development.
“Creggan County Park is a fantastic facility and I am absolutely delighted to be representing Council at the official launch," councillor Gallagher said.
"I am very impressed with the development work and the provision of conference and training facilities, administration, showers and changing rooms, a restaurant area and recreational facilities."
The County Park was a very important facility for the people of Creggan and the provision of funding had enabled the implementation of a range of new programmes to benefit all members of the local community, he concluded.
