Derry roads get record spend

A record £2.7million will be spent on structural roads maintenance in the Derry City Council area in the coming year.

Divisional Roads Manager, Dr Andrew Murray, revealed the figure as he presented DRD Roads Service’s autumn report to Derry City Council.

Dr Murray said: "This is a huge increase in investment over previous years and is the highest level of spend on record for the District. Structural maintenance spending across Northern Ireland is also at an all time high of almost £80 million this year, which matches the figure envisaged by the Regional Transportation Strategy.

"Major resurfacing schemes have been completed on the A2 at Culmore Road, Duke Street and Caw Roundabout, the A515 at Ballyarnet Roundabout and the B69 Baranailt Road."

Dr Murray said the Roads Service would be working hard to minimise delays by keeping road closures to a minimum and avoiding peak traffic times where possible.

At the meeting, Dr Murray also up-dated Councillors on the progress of schemes being carried out during 2003/04 and priorities for 2004/05.
