Former Shadow Secretary Kevin McNamara Dies, Aged 82

Former Shadow Secretary of State, Kevin McNamara, has died at the age of 82.

Mr McNamara passed away after he suddenly took ill while on holiday in Spain.

He was diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer, however he had no previous symptoms of the illness.

In a statement, his family said: "He died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, following a short and unexpected illness.

"Kevin's family wishes to thank all those in Carboneras and Almeria, including medical staff, cleaners and caterers, and the local Catholic clergy, for their professionalism, care and consideration.

"The family would also like to recognise the smooth administrative process in Spain, delivered through the EHIC system.

"Thanks are also due to the Free Spirit insurance company for facilitating Kevin's desired return from Spain, and to all the NHS medical and other staff, including district nurses and the palliative care team, in Southport and Formby."

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams said: "I was deeply saddened to learn of Kevin's death.

"In his long and distinguished career in the British Parliament Kevin was well known for his outspoken criticism of many aspects of British policy in the North and in defence of human rights.

"He advocated for closer greater cooperation and harmonisation between the North and South; supported the efforts to establish the peace process, and was well known for his support for Irish unity.

"To his wife Nora and his four children, I want to extend Sinn Féin condolences on his death."
