Polling stations attacked in Derry

Police are to examine CCTV pictures after police officers were attacked and around 50 petrol bombs were thrown at several polling stations in Londonderry last night.

Polling stations at Shantallow, Galliagh, Hazelbank, Creggan and Carnhill were all targeted by groups of youths as officers and electoral officials left following a day of voting across Northern Ireland.

At Shantallow, up to 75 youths threw rocks and other objects while Galliagh electoral officials had to be escorted from the polling station by police.

Inspector Rod Flood of the PSNI described those behind the trouble as "thugs" and said such violent actions "could have resulted in fatal consequences" for those in the vicinity of the trouble.
