Football legends to unveil footbridge makeover

A south Belfast footbridge which received a makeover thanks to a successful poll amongst local football fans, is set to be officially opened by two Northern Ireland legends next week.

Gerry Armstrong and Billy Hamilton, both of whom represented their country in the Spain '82 World Cup, will unveil the work at the bottom of Lower Windsor Avenue in Belfast on Monday.

The resulting vote in a Belfast Telegraph poll means passer's by will see pictures of Northern Ireland’s top three managers, Billy Bingham, Peter Doherty and Danny Blanchflower, as well as a depiction of Gerry Armstrong's goal against Spain in the 1982 World Cup, painted over graffiti which originally adorned the footbridge adjacent to Windsor Park, Northern Ireland's national stadium.

The IFA, in partnership with community groups and BIAZE FX artists, Glenn Black and Ken Maze, was supported in the project by the Community Relations Council, NI Football Fans, Linfield FC, Belfast City Council, local community groups, volunteers, school children, Ballymacarrett Arts and Cultural Society.
