Work to commence on £8.7m Foyle Bridge scheme
Work is set to begin next week on strengthening the Foyle Bridge in Londonderry.
The £8.7m refurbishment contract, which is to be undertaken by Farrans Construction Ltd, is due to run over the next 11 months.
NIO Minister, John Spellar said: "This is a major investment in the infrastructure around the city and if the scheme had not gone ahead it would have eventually resulted in serious long term traffic management measures to reduce the volumes of traffic using the bridge.
"Work involves strengthening of the steel structure, repainting the bridge, resurfacing of both carriageways and footways and refurbishment of other components of the bridge," he said.
Slight road traffic congestion is expected over the Christmas period, with each of the two lane carriageways on the Bridge being reduced to one lane.
The resurfacing phase will necessitate the closure of one carriageway at a time with a contraflow set up on the other carriageway to facilitate the removal and replacement of the existing surface. This operation will take place between July and September 2004.
A temporary 40 mph speed restriction will be introduced on the bridge for the duration of the works.
