Unemployment Figures Fall Between February And March
New figures have revealed official unemployment numbers have dropped 0.2% between February and March.
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) publication states the official unemployment rate has fallen from 6.6% to 6.4%, and from 8.3% compared with March last year.
With 3,300 fewer people unemployed in March compared to February, there were 39,800 fewer people unemployed last month compared with 12 months earlier.
In addition, unemployment among the 15-24 bracket has also fallen by 0.6% in the space of a month.
Jobs Minister Mary Mitchell O'Connor welcomed the figures, stating it was "very gratifying" to see the unemployment rate for March drop.
"This further decrease in the monthly unemployment figures is great news." she said.
"Seeing the unemployment rate for March drop down to 6.4% from 6.6% last month, meaning there are 3,300 less people unemployed, is very gratifying.
"Being able to earn a livelihood is all important, allowing people to take charge of their future, to make plans and to have hope and optimism. I would like everyone to have that opportunity for self-determination and fulfilment through employment."

Newly published figures show that the number of people claiming unemployment benefit fell by 500 in May, the 17th reduction in a row. The labour Force Survey revealed that there are now 55,500 people claiming unemployment in Northern Ireland – at 6.3% of the total workforce, the figures remains above the UK average of 3.2%.

UUP Comments On Latest Unemployment Figures
Ulster Unionist Economy spokesperson Sandra Overend MLA has commented on the latest unemployment figures which have been released. They show that an additional 600 people were added to the local claimant count which now stands at 64,100.

May Unemployment Nears 14%
Last month's official figures show the number of Irish people who are unemployed has increased again - despite previous falls. The Central Statistics Office revealed the number of people signing on climbed in May, having fallen back slightly in April.

Unemployment Rises For Second Consecutive Month
Unemployment has risen for the second month in a row according to the latest Labour Force Survey (LFS). The report revealed that in those claiming unemployment benefits in Northern Ireland rose by 200 in March. It follows the same rise in February of this year. The current unemployment rate now stands at 38,600.
