Number Of Off-Licences To Close On St Patrick's Day

A number of off-licences are to close in the Holyland area of Belfast on St Patrick's Day in a bid to prevent anti-social behaviour.

The off-licences have agreed to close "voluntarily" for a number of hours and university's are also calling on students not to travel to the area.

Alliance South Belfast MLA Paula Bradshaw said she was "pleased" that universities and off-licences had taken a "pro-active approach".

She said: "Students and others need to be aware of the serious consequences of their behaviour if they engage in any antisocial activities.

"We do not want to stop people having any fun on St Patrick's Day. But for the long-term residents of the Holyland, it has become an annual day of dread. There are plenty of other organised activities, I would encourage people to engage with them instead."
