Belfast rally supports better protection for pensioners

A rally has taken place in Belfast aimed at ensuring pensioners receive more protection from police following a spate of attacks and burglaries against the elderly over the past year.

Organised by the Transport and General Workers' Union, Wednesday's rally included members of local political parties and pensioners who have been affected by such a traumatic experience.

Speaking at the rally, retired union official Eugene O'Callaghan called on PSNI Chief Constable Hugh Orde to direct more police resources on preventing further cases of incidents against pensioners instead of road traffic matters.

He said: "An often repeated excuse for lack of success in apprehending the perpetrators of these ghastly crimes is lack of manpower.

"Yet, when it comes to road traffic matters there seems to be an abundance of manpower. Surely the chief constable has got his priorities wrong."

Wednesday's rally was organised in response to the murder of Loughbrickland pensioner, Ted O'Hare who was found dead by his three brothers following a robbery at their Co Down home last weekend.

Meanwhile, a Londonderry pensioner has become the latest victim of burglars in the province. Elizabeth Hutton had her home ransacked by burglars on Tuesday when she was out shopping. Savings and jewellery were stolen during the robbery.
