Unionist in-fighting continues unabated

Unionist in-fighting continued today between the DUP and UUP following yesterday's finger-pointing confrontation on the streets of east Belfast.

UUP Assembly candidate for Strangford David McNarry said Tuesday's stunt by the DUP showed their cowardice in taking on Sinn Fein.

Mr McNarry said: "It is laughable to hear the DUP harp on about being unafraid to go to any corner of the Province. Like all bullies, once confronted the tough exterior melts away to reveal cowardice.

"It is noteworthy that for all of their talk of taking on Sinn Fein not once have the DUP gone and taken the battle to them, unlike my party.

"Instead their whole campaign is based on attacking fellow unionists."

However, North Down DUP Assembly election candidate, Peter Weir, hit back telling unionist voters that the UUP must not be trusted with their vote again.

Speaking at DUP Headquarters in Belfast, Mr Weir said: “This Assembly election is all about who negotiates for unionism. That much is now clear.

"The DUP’s long stated policy that new negotiations leading to a new agreement which unionists, and not just nationalists, can support has now been accepted by virtually every party in this election."

Mr Weir said the choice for unionist voters was now clear, an "Ulster Unionist Party and its long record of failure and the Democratic Unionist Party and our clear and consistent message".
