Customs seize over six million cigarettes in Co Armagh

Customs officers have uncovered over six million smuggled cigarettes in Co Armagh.

The container-load was seized during an operation in Moy on Friday evening after the Dorchester brand cigarettes had been shipped from Malaysia.

Customs’ head of investigation Northern Ireland Jane Salt said: “This is a significant seizure and shows Customs’ determination to disrupt the activities of large scale smugglers.

“Tobacco smugglers put the legitimate shopkeeper at risk and steal money from the honest taxpayers of Northern Ireland."

Officers confirmed that if the cigarettes been sold locally, public services would have lost over £1 million in excise duty.
