Fire At Fuel Recycling Plant 'Most Idiotic And Dangerous Incident Of The Year'

Police have condemned those who set a fire at a fuel recycling plant, as "the most idiotic and dangerous incident of the year".

Police were called to reports of a fire at the plant at the Brannish Road Industrial Estate in Downpatrick.

Upon arrival police found that an oil lorry had been set on fire inside a fuel recycling plant, which contained approximately 100,000 litres of fuel, oil and combustible waste.

It is understood that Downpatrick NIFR South tackled the fire quickly and brought it under control before it spread to nearby silos.

Police appealed for anyone with information on the incident to contact them.

An industrial recycling plant in Omagh, Co Tyrone, is on fire, with more than 50 firefighters at the scene. It is understood the fire broke out at RecyCo, on the Barony Road, Mountfield, in the early hours of Monday morning.

NI's Chief Fire Officer Announces His Retirement
The Chief Fire Officer for Northern Ireland, Peter Craig, has announced that he is to retire after over 35 years of distinguished Service. Peter Craig is one of the longest serving officers in Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service and was appointed as Chief Fire Officer in February 2011, having been the acting Chief from July 2010.

UK-Born Limerick Fireman Compensated
An English-born firefighter has been awarded €5,000 in compensation for discrimination by Limerick City Council. An Equality Tribunal heard Martin Mannering, now living in Cappamore, Co Limerick was left a note to leave his job because he was no longer "in Middlesbrough".
