RIRA bomb alert hits Co Down town
The Real IRA was being blamed today for a security alert in which a 20kg bomb was found in Newcastle, Co Down.
A number of houses had to be evacuated in the seaside town on Tuesday after a telephone caller warned of a bomb in the area.
The call, which contained a recognised code word, warned of a device near the vacant Enniskeen Hotel. Following a search, police declared the warning as an elaborate hoax.
However, a short time later the 20kg bomb, with a timer attached, was found in the Bryansford Road area.
Nearby homes were evacuated as police made the device safe. The operation lasted almost 10 hours as police carried out a follow up security operation.
Police said that there had clearly been an attempt to kill or seriously injure officers.
