Sinn Féin Election Agent's Car Targeted In Arson Attack

A Sinn Féin election agent's car has been targeted in an arson attack in Bangor, Co Down.

A petrol bomb was thrown inside a black Citroen C4 Picasso in the Towerview Crescent area at around 11.30pm on Monday, 20 February.

The vehicle's window was also smashed.

Police said they are treating it as a "hate crime".

Sinn Féin's Michelle O'Neill said: "I absolutely condemn tonight's arson attack by masked men on the car of a Sinn Féin election agent in Bangor.

"This is an attack on the democratic process but it will not deter the local candidate or anyone else in Sinn Féin.

"There are clearly those who are intent on turning this into a brutal campaign and sectarianising the election.

"I am calling on all party leaders to condemn this attack on democracy and send a clear message to those responsible that this will not be tolerated.

"Despite this and other attacks, Sinn Féin will continue to stand for equality and respect and integrity in the institutions."

Alliance North Down candidate Stephen Farry has condemned the attack.

He said: "This arson attack, on the car belonging to a Sinn Féin election agent, should be condemned by everyone who considers themselves a democrat. Because you do not agree with someone's politics is not an excuse for violence.

"I would urge anyone with information about this attack to pass it to the police on the 101 number or to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111."
