Business and Innovation Centre 'step' up to challenge
The NI Business and Innovation Centre (NORBIC) has been awarded the accolade of being the top UK National Shell Technology Enterprise Programme (STEP) agency of the year at the recent national finals in London.
Dr Bernard Toal, Chief Executive of NORIBIC, and Clare McGee, STEP Development Officer with NORIBIC, were in London to receive the awards.
The STEP Programme, funded in Northern Ireland by Invest NI and the Department for Employment and Learning and managed by NORIBIC, is a UK-wide placement programme for undergraduates wishing to work for an eight-week period during the summer in a small firm on a specific business or technology related project.
NORIBIC achieved their award under vigorous competition from across the UK by demonstrating excellence in programme growth, programme size, host company appraisal; project quality; student benefits and student appraisal of Noribic support.
STEP 2003 saw the programme grow in Northern Ireland, with two regional finals for the first time, producing the Most Enterprising Student for Northern Ireland Eastern and Western Region.
Craig Young won Most Enterprising Student NI (East) for his project to turn around the fortunes of JB Flowers Ltd, with a new company formation, marketing plan, market expansion and a new name – Afresh Ltd.
The Most Enterprising Student NI (West) was Gemma O’Neill, who scooped the award with a market diversification strategy for Maydown Precision Engineering Ltd.
Both students went forward to the prestigious UK National Finals on 28th October. As a measure of their achievement to get this far, STEP 2003 had over 14,000 student applications, which resulted in 1,200 placements managed by 75 STEP Agencies across the length and breadth of the UK. There were 18 finalists in London.
STEP is a business support service that helps small businesses gain access to highly motivated and skilled undergraduates dedicated to tackle a specific project.
