NI child poverty worse than England
Four out of 10 young people in Northern Ireland live in poverty, a leading charity has claimed.
According to a new survey commissioned by children's charity Barnardo's, child poverty in the province is worse than in England.
The charity blamed the figures on lower incomes, a higher cost of living compared to the rest of the UK and more families claiming benefits.
Today's figures were released as Barnardo’s launched a brand new campaign to highlight the fact that despite having the fourth largest economy in the world the UK has one of the highest levels of child poverty of all industrialised countries.
Barnardo’s principal policy officer, Neera Sharma said: “Poverty is the single biggest threat to a child’s future. It is essential that poverty is tackled now if we are to affect future outcomes for children.
“Children from deprived backgrounds are more likely to grow up to be socially excluded, homeless, to have problems with drugs or alcohol and to commit or be victims of crime. A child born into poverty today will have to fight to have the opportunities all children should take for granted.”
Poverty is at the root of the majority of the diverse problems that Barnardo’s helps young people and their families cope with everyday, she added.
