UUP Raises Concerns Over Womens Centre Childcare Fund
Ulster Unionist MLA Jenny Palmer has raised concerns over the £800,000 Womens Centre Childcare Fund.
Jenny Palmer said the vital fund allows Womens Centres to provide good quality low-cost childcare where it was most needed and is due to end in March 2017.
She said: "This is a very serious issue for families. As recently as this week, Employers for Childcare released the results of their 2016 survey on childcare costs. The results are shocking with 1 in 3 respondents stating that the childcare bill was their largest monthly outgoing and 50% of parents indicating that they had reduced their working hours or left work altogether because of the cost of childcare. The results also showed that this is having a much bigger impact on mums than dads.
"If this fund ceases to exist, or is left in a state of uncertainty, children are the ones who will suffer the most. High-quality childcare is vital for mothers and children alike, and the Executive must recognise this."
Work Starts On Road Resurfacing Project In Crossgar
Work has started on a £100,000 road resurfacing project in Crossgar, Co Down.
The scheme, on the Ballywillan Road, involves the resurfacing of a 1.0 km stretch of the C277 Ballywillan Road from the B6 Manse Road to the Jericho Road junction.
Infrastructure Minister Chris Hazzard said: "This £100,000 scheme represents a significant investment in the roads infrastructure in the Crossgar area and will deliver significant improvements to the strength and road surface quality of this stretch of carriageway.
"This will help meet the needs of the local economy and improve transport connections for people, goods and services."
The diversion route will be signed with traffic being diverted via Derryboye Road, B7 Killyleagh Road and Ballywillan Road.
