Three Groups Wins Awards At 'Community Oscars'
Three Belfast community groups won awards at the Pride of Place ceremony, known locally as the 'Community Oscars'.
Almost 1,000 civic and community leaders from across the island of Ireland attended the IPB Pride of Place Awards in association with Co-Operation Ireland at the Belfast Waterfront.
The Belfast winners were East Belfast (represented by East Belfast Community Development Agency - EBCDA) in the population over 2,000 category, Play Resource Warehouse who received the First Special Award and Upper Springfield Area, West Belfast (represented by Glór na Móna) who won the Cities with a population under 1,000 category. Greater Whitewell Community Surgery was also nominated in the Cities competition: Population 1,000 – 2,000 category.
The competition promotes and celebrates the best in community development and recognises the selfless efforts of people in making their neighbourhoods better places to live, work and socialise.
Belfast Lord Mayor, Alderman Brian Kingston said: "It's been such an honour to host the Pride of Place Awards in Belfast. And I am delighted that three of our wonderful community organisations have been recognised for the incredible work that they do on a daily basis in our city, along with all of those who were nominated. They act as fantastic role models for others and are helping to transform lives and communities."
