Mayor of Derry targeted in hoax bomb attack
The Mayor of Derry has been targeted by dissident republicans after participating in this year's Remembrance Day ceremony in the city.
A hoax bomb was placed at the rear of the house of SDLP councillor, Shaun Gallagher on Monday and was discovered shortly afterwards by his son.
Mr Gallagher's home, along with 10 other house in the Shantallow area of the city, were immediately evacuated as army bomb experts carried out a controlled explosion on the device.
Mr Gallagher described those behind the attack as "political dinosaurs" and said he would not be deterred from carrying out his work as Mayor of the city.
"I am deeply shocked at this action as I believe this mindless attack is an attempt to bring fear to myself and my family," councillor Gallagher said.
"As Mayor of the city I have received support from all communities and I will not be deterred by this cowardly act. I intend to represent all interests through the office of Mayor.”
The security alert ended at around 2.30am on Tuesday and a number of items were taken away for forensic examination.
