Investigation Launched After Attack On Cllr In East Belfast

An investigation has been launched into an alleged attack on a PUP councillor in east Belfast on Sunday morning.

It is understood that Progressive Unionist Party councillor John Kyle was attacked when he confronted four youths who were vandalising a memorial to late PUP leader David Ervine on the Albertbridge Road.

According to reports Cllr Kyle approached the youths at about 8.20am, when he witnessed one of the youths defecating on the memorial, while another filmed it.

Cllr Kyle alleges that when he confronted the group, one of youths kicked him off his bicycle before fleeing towards the Short Strand area.

Kyle said that he subsequently reported the incident to police as a "sectarian hate crime".

Condemning the incident Alliance East Belfast MLA Chris Lyttle said: "This incident must be condemned by all. There can be absolutely no excuse for the attack on Councillor Kyle or the disgusting behaviour at the memorial to Mr Ervine. I would urge anyone with information to pass it to the police or the Crimestoppers charity."
