Over 65's urged to get flu vaccine

Northern Ireland's over 65's were being urged to take up the flu vaccine after the first cases of flu were reported here.

Local GPs say an early start to the flu season has begun after an increase in consultation rates for flu-like illness, predominantly among children aged less than 14 years, was reported. Similar increases have also been seen in England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.

Northern Ireland’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Henrietta Campbell said: "An effective vaccine is available to protect against flu. Every year, the vaccine is offered to all those aged 65 and over and also to under 65s with certain medical conditions. This includes children with specific medical conditions.

"It’s not too late to be vaccinated and I would encourage anyone from these groups who has not yet received flu vaccine to get the vaccine soon."

Dr Campbell also urged those aged under 65 with certain medical conditions to also take up the vaccine.

"Anyone who has flu-like symptoms should stay indoors, drink plenty of fluids and take paracetamol or aspirin to lower their body temperature," she added.

The flu vaccine is currently available free of charge from GPs.
