Twaddell Agreement: Orange Order To Apply To Parades Commission
The Orange Order is expected to put forward a proposal which could see a resolution over a parade dispute in Ardoyne in north Belfast.
A deal was reached between the Orange Lodge and Crumlin and Ardoyne Residents Association (CARA) on Friday, 23 September, over the Twaddell Avenue protest which has being going on since July 2013.
This means three lodges and two bands will pass the shops in Ardoyne playing hymns on Saturday, 01 October.
Justice Minister Claire Sugden welcomed the news.
She said: "I want to pay tribute to the facilitators and all those involved for their tireless efforts to achieve this important agreement to resolve the Twaddell parades dispute and thank them for all their work on making this agreement possible. I look forward to seeing this new agreement implemented and an end to the protest.
"I also wish to take this opportunity to thank the Chief Constable and his officers who were at the frontline policing this situation over the course of the last three years, for their impartial and impeccable support to protect the entire community at the Twaddell interface."
Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly said: "I welcome the agreement between the Crumlin Ardoyne Residents Association and local Orange lodges to resolve outstanding issues related to contentious parades on the Crumlin Road.
"This agreement shows that inclusive dialogue is the way forward in tackling what can seem to be intractable issues.
"I commend the Crumlin Ardoyne Residents Association for their commitment and dedication over many years to resolving this difficult situation.
"This agreement deserves the full support of all political representatives in the area.
"It augers well for the future and for future community relations in North Belfast and will help build on the good work that has already been carried out in the area."
