Firefighter dies following hotel fire

A firefighter has died following a fire at a Hotel in Limavady at the weekend.

Joe McCloskey, 50, from Dungiven, died in hospital on Sunday after he fell through the roof of a store room at Gorteen House Hotel as he tackled a blaze.

The father of five suffered extensive burns to his body as colleagues struggled to rescue him from the inferno.

Five of his colleagues suffered minor injuries as a result of their rescue attempts during the early hours of Saturday morning.

Northern Ireland's Chief Fire Officer, Colin Lammey, paid tribute to Mr McCloskey who was in his 25th year of service with the Fire Brigade.

Forensic tests are currently being carried out to establish the cause of the blaze, however it is thought that the fire may have been started deliberately.
