Head Of Olympic Council Of Ireland Arrested In Rio

The Head of the Olympic Council of Ireland, Pat Hickey, has reportedly been arrested in Rio over an alleged ticket scam.

According to the Brazilian newspaper Estadão, Mr Hickey, 71, was arrested at a hotel on Wednesday morning, 17 August.

The journalist who reported his arrest, Jamil Chade, also claimed on Twitter that Mr Hickey was taken to hospital for "feeling sick" during his arrest.

In a statement the Olympic Council of Ireland said on its website it is aware of Mr Hickey's arrest however it is seeking total clarity on the situation before it comments further.

Sinn Féin's Spokesperson for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Imelda Munster TD, also accused Mr Hickey of "humiliating" Independent TD Minister Shane Ross in Rio.

She said: "We need to see more concrete action from Minister Ross.

"It is now incomprehensible that the Olympic Committee of Ireland could with any credibility continue with its own internal inquiry when its most senior figure has been arrested in connection to the matter at hand.

"Minister Ross must recover from his 'shell shock' as quickly as he can and establish a separate inquiry.

"It is vital that we get to the bottom of how this ticketing controversy was allowed to happen and that we introduce measures to ensure that this never happens again."
