Over 1,000 Fish Killed In Pollution Incident In Co L'Derry
Over 1,000 fish have been killed following a pollution spill in Co L'Derry.
The Northern Ireland Environment Agency has launched an investigation after a range of species were killed over several kilometres in the River Faughan in Claudy.
SDLP MLA Gerry McMullun described the find as "something out of a horror movie".
He said: "Causing water pollution is a criminal offence and whoever is behind this – whether through negligence or malice – must be brought before the courts.
"With no idea what is behind this at this stage, it is unclear how long it will take before the stretch of water recovers. I will be seeking a full report from the Environment Minister on this shocking situation."
Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald said: "The cause of the fish kill has not been determined as yet but the extent of the kill is severe and over a large section of river.
"I have been in touch with NIEA this morning and been informed that the cause of the kill is suspected silage effluent.
"The Loughs Agency are conducting analysis and walking the river to narrow down and identify the source.
"I was also informed that NI Water have taken precautions to minimise any further spread of the pollution.
"This incident needs to be fully investigated, those responsible must be held accountable and brought before the courts.
"The penalties imposed for incidents such as this should be as severe as the law allows."

NI water pollution incidents falling: report DoE
The number of pollution incidents affecting water in Northern Ireland last year has fallen, according to the latest figures from the DoE. The figures were revealed by the Department of the Environment’s (DOE) Environment & Heritage Service (EHS) which has just published ‘Water Pollution Incidents and Enforcement 2004’.

Cyclist Killed In North Down
A cyclist has been killed following a collision with a lorry. It is understood that the victim is male and aged in his 30s. The incident happened on the A1 carriageway outside Newry at about 20:30 on Thursday. The man died in hospital a short time after arrival. No details on the man's identity have been released.

Man Fined For Eight Water Pollution Offences
A County L'Derry businessman has been fined £10,000 for eight separate water pollution offences. Norman Menary (69) of Brough Road, Castledawson, Magherafelt, pleaded guilty at Coleraine Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ballymena.
