Call For Financial Package For Ardoyne Traders To Be Brought Forward

An SDLP MLA is calling on the Finance and Economy Ministers to urgently bring forward a financial package to assist Ardoyne traders whose businesses have been crippled for the past three years as a result of the parading standoff and illegal camp at Twaddell.

Nichola Mallon said: "These traders have faithfully served, to the highest standard, all customers no matter what their background. For three years now, through no fault of their own, they’ve been caught at the centre of a maelstrom. They've seen a devastating drop in trade with a number being forced to close their doors. Others faced with increased overheads and less footfall as a direct result of the protests, are struggling to keep their doors open and local people in employment. The impact of the camp, the nightly parades, the heavy police presence night after night and the breakdown in community relations is decimating their businesses. A number have also told me how it is all taking its toll on their mental health.

"I have called on the Finance and Economy Ministers to urgently prepare a financial package to give them some assistance. Central to this package I believe must be a period of rates relief and capital investment to improve this shopping area. If £21 million can be found to police the illegal camp at Twaddell, surely a tiny sum can be found to help these traders."
