Reduction In Number Of Bonfire Incidents - NIFRS

There has been a reduction in the number of bonfire related incidents, according to the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS).

Last year, Firefighters attended 24 bonfire related incidents on the 11th night, which is 27 less bonfire related incidents attended on the same night in 2014.

NIFRS Assistant Chief Fire Officer Alan Walmsley said: "Firstly, it is very encouraging that firefighters dealt with a 53% reduction in the number of bonfire related incidents compared to 12 months previously. I must commend the continued engagement at local level between community leaders and NIFRS personnel in helping to decrease the number of bonfire related incidents across Northern Ireland.

"We would appeal to the bonfire builders and community representatives to stop using tyres on bonfires. The burning of tyres releases toxic fumes, which are harmful to the environment and also cause hazardous health conditions for those attending or living close to the bonfire."

Lagan Construction To Continue To Work On Watermains Project

Lagan Construction is to continue work on a £300,000 watermains improvement project in Hillsborough, Co Down.

The extent of the work, which is to begin at the end of July, is along Lisburn Street and Lisburn Road between Ballynahinch Street and the Culcavy Road.

The overall programme of work will be completed by the end of August.

The upgraded watermains will improve the quality, reliability and security of the local water supply, while reducing leakage and improving pressure in the local area.

Traffic management and signage will be in place in all areas.

Access to all properties adjacent to the works will be maintained at all times.

New Alliance Councillor For Bangor

Karen Douglas has been named the newest Alliance Councillor, after being co-opted to replace out-going Councillor Stuart Anderson at a special meeting in Bangor.

With a particular passion for integrated education, community engagement and a desire to drive Bangor Central forward, Karen - founder of the regional Sexual Assault Referral Centre for Northern Ireland - said she was "honoured" to take over the role from Stuart, who is standing down due to personal reasons.

Councillor Douglas said: "It is an honour to follow in the footsteps of Stuart Anderson. Since 2014 he has been a fantastic advocate for the Bangor Central area and I have been inspired by his hard work and dedication.

"I'm also thrilled to be joining the strong, cohesive Ards and North Down Alliance team, so often the voice of reason among others more concerned with playing party politics than delivering what's right for everyone."
