Paramedic Attacked By Patient In Co Antrim

A paramedic has been attacked by a patient in Co Antrim.

The incident happened at the back of an ambulance on the Ballybogey Road at around 3.30am on Sunday, 03 July.

The patient, who had sustained a head injury, lashed out and pulled equipment and dressings from their storage points.

When attempting to restrain the patient, a paramedic was punched on the head and bit on their arm.

The patient was taken to Causeway Hospital and the paramedic attended the Emergency Department and stood down for the remainder of their shift.

John McPoland from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) said: "This is the latest in a series of attacks on ambulance staff and the trust again calls for strongest possible action to be taken against anyone found guilty of assaulting ambulance crews."
