Council Urged To Vote Again Over Naming Of McCreesh Park

Newry and Mourne District Council is being urged to vote again over the naming of McCreesh Park following a recommendation by the Equality Commission.

Patrick Street playground has been named after IRA hunger striker Raymond McCreesh.

Unionists objected to the name of the playground and the council has voted to keep the name three times.

In a statement the Equality Commission said: "The Commission has advised the Council of this and recommended that, to ensure transparency, the Council debate and vote on this issue should be conducted in public and properly recorded and that Councillors should be provided with a qualitative analysis of the consultation responses prior to that debate and vote.

"The Commission has communicated this decision to the other parties to the Judicial Review."
